15K gold, rose cut diamonds and cabochon turquoise. Believed to be made in England circa 1850-80's. Approximately 1 1/2 inches (a little under 4cm) long, including the bale. Approximately 0.50ct diamonds and 2.60ct turquoise. Shape is perfect for holding and displaying a miniature portrait of a loved one.
May have once held lockets of hair, but that custom is no longer practised. Extremely well made with a tiny thumb piece for opening the sections and almost invisible hinges on the other side.
The top is set with 3 parallel rows of cabochon turquoise, overlaid with a band of rosecut diamonds - like a ribbon around a wrapped-up gift. A generously sized bale allows for a chain of any size.
The locket pendant can be worn at varying lengths: from the nape of the neck, to swinging on a long chain. Gold was acid tested as 15k. Condition: good with minor wear commensurte with age. There is a tiny ding at the back - as seen in the pictures; there are scratched initials inside the locket - would be covered up by a picture. Glass on one side to protect the portrait. Please see enlarged photos for details. Do not hesitate to ask questions, which we will do our best to answer. Appraisal available to new owner.
